Bloody Halloween Trifle

Layers of red velvet cake, fudgy brownies, rich chocolate pudding, and fluffy whipped topping, finished with edible blood and creepy candy eyeballs. This Bloody Halloween Trifle is the ultimate spooky dessert for Halloween parties! It’s chocolatey, ridiculously easy to assemble, and just creepy enough to make everyone look twice.

The best part? We’re keeping things simple with boxed cake mix, brownie mix, and premade pudding. No complicated baking required, just a whole lot of chocolate and a little Halloween magic.

Why You’ll Love This Halloween Trifle

Easy to make: Boxed cake and brownie mixes keep prep simple without sacrificing flavor.

Perfect for Halloween parties: The dramatic red layers, edible blood, and candy eyeballs make this dessert a spooky centerpiece.

Chocolate lover’s dream: Red velvet cake, fudgy brownies, and chocolate pudding in every bite.

Make-ahead friendly: Assemble it the night before and let it chill until you’re ready to serve.

Fun to customize: Add extra candy eyeballs, cookie crumbs, or your favorite Halloween sprinkles.

Ingredient Notes

Red Velvet Cake: One boxed red velvet cake mix, baked in a 9 x 13-inch baking dish and cut into bite-sized squares. Prepare the cake according to the package instructions and let it cool completely before assembling.

Brownies: One boxed brownie mix, baked in an 8 x 8-inch baking dish. I recommend fudgy brownies for an extra-rich chocolate layer. Allow them to cool before cutting into small squares.

Chocolate Pudding: Twelve individual chocolate pudding cups (6 ounces each) make this dessert incredibly easy to put together. No mixing or cooking required!

Cool Whip: One 16-ounce container, completely thawed. This creates the fluffy, creamy layers that balance out all that chocolate.

Wilton Edible Blood: I used Wilton’s edible blood drizzle to create the creepy blood effect throughout the trifle and on top.

Candy Eyeballs: The finishing touch! Scatter candy eyeball sprinkles over the top for an extra-spooky Halloween look.

Tips for the Best Halloween Trifle

Cool your baked layers completely. Warm cake or brownies will melt the whipped topping and make the layers messy.

Use a clear glass trifle dish. The visible layers of chocolate, cream, and edible blood are what make this dessert so fun.

Cut everything into bite-sized pieces. Smaller cake and brownie squares make assembling and serving much easier.

Don’t worry about perfect layers. This dessert is supposed to look a little messy and spooky!

Save some cake and brownies for the top. They add height and texture and make the candy eyeballs stand out.

Add the final decorations before serving. This keeps the eyeballs looking their best and the blood drizzle dramatic.

FAQS

Can I make this Halloween trifle ahead of time?

Absolutely! You can assemble the trifle the night before and keep it covered in the refrigerator. I recommend adding the final edible blood drizzle and candy eyeballs shortly before serving.

Can I use homemade cake and brownies instead?

Of course! Homemade red velvet cake and brownies work beautifully. Just make sure everything is completely cooled before assembling.

Can I use homemade chocolate pudding?

Yes! You can substitute homemade chocolate pudding, as long as it’s thick, chilled, and fully set. You’ll need approximately 9 cups to replace the 12 individual 6-ounce pudding cups.

Do I need a trifle dish?

Not necessarily! Any large, deep glass serving bowl will work. A clear bowl is ideal so everyone can see the layers.

Can I use homemade whipped cream instead of Cool Whip?

Yes, although stabilized whipped cream will hold up better if you’re preparing the dessert in advance.

Storage

Cover the trifle tightly with plastic wrap or a fitted lid and refrigerate for up to 3 days. The cake and brownies will gradually soften as they absorb moisture from the pudding and whipped topping.

For the best texture and presentation, enjoy within the first 24–48 hours.

Freezing: I don’t recommend freezing the assembled trifle, as the pudding and whipped topping may separate or become watery after thawing.
