The Easiest Homemade Sugar Cookies

There’s something magical about sugar cookies — the kind that takes you straight back to childhood. For me, it all started in my babcia’s kitchen. Her rolling out dough on the counter, the scent of butter and sugar drifting through the air, and how her cookies always came out perfectly soft and golden.

She didn’t need a fancy recipe; she just knew exactly when the dough was ready, and somehow, her cookies always tasted like love.

Growing up, I would watch her bake and secretly dream of the day I’d have my own recipe — one I could call mine, but still inspired by her magic. That dream finally came true with this recipe. It’s my version of a classic sugar cookie: soft, buttery, and just sweet enough to satisfy your cravings, but with a little structure so you can decorate them however you like.

A Love Letter to Sugar Cookies

There’s something about a plain sugar cookie that feels timeless. They’re simple, unpretentious, and yet they carry so much potential. With a little rolling, cutting, and icing, they can transform into anything: delicate hearts for Valentine’s Day, cheerful stars for Christmas, or spooky shapes for Halloween.

For me, Halloween is where they really come to life. I can take that soft, buttery base and turn it into ghosts, pumpkins, witch hats, or silly little monsters. Decorating them is almost meditative — spreading icing in perfect little swirls, adding candy eyes, or sprinkling colored sugar that glimmers in the light. Each cookie becomes its own little character, and I can’t help but smile at each one.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Soft, buttery perfection: Just like babcia’s cookies, these stay tender and chewy without being crumbly.
  • Perfect for decorating: Chill the dough, roll it out, and cut any shape you like — or keep it simple with drop cookies.
  • Nostalgic and comforting: Each bite carries that warm, familiar feeling of homemade treats made with love.
  • Fun for all ages: Decorate with kids, friends, or enjoy a solo creative session while sipping coffee or cocoa.
